Review #26 | "The Huntsman: Winter's War" (2016)

Although this film is publicized as a prequel, it most definitely is not. The first 15 minutes of the film gives the audience some background on the Huntsman to drive the plot forward seven years. This film simply could not stand up to the original which, although beloved, has it's own issues. Despite Kristen Stewart's sketchy performance in the original, "Winter's War" could have been enhanced by casting the actress in this film as well. The story simply doesn't work without Snow White being comprehensively present throughout the majority of the film. Besides, wasn't it the Huntsman's kiss that first awakened her? So... what happend with that? It seems as though the writers decided to ignore that (ICONIC) bit of the fairytale.

Chris Hemsworth is fantastic. He brings new life and depth to the Hunstman he established three years ago. Likewise, he works well paired with Jessica Chastain. The pair work wonders on screen as long lost, albeit suffering, lovers. Emily Blunt brings dynamic life to this film's take on the Ice Queen, and although Ravenna has a short-lived comeback, Charlize Theron commands the screen. However, if you are going to reprise an actor, be sure to put them to good use, not to simply introduce the plot (ahem... Sam Clafin).

The film is pretty, despite some interesting CGI, but it can be lived with if one lends their imagination to the director's vision. The Ice Queen's powers look more menacing than any other adaption from recent years, and Ravenna's stealth does not go without a glamorous showcase either.

If you are the fan of the first film, give this SEQUEL a go. It may be rewatachable, but nothing really sticks with it.
