Darren Aronofsky's flighty agenda within Mother! renders a myriad of genres within one film which.... works? With more visually arresting stimuli than expected it would be easy for an unsuspecting audience member to walk away feeling utterly dissatisfied, but Aronofsky's storytelling drives the narrative into a somewhat comprehensive conclusion. A cut-and-dry resolution to Mother! would have the opposite effect of traditional closure in this particular film precisely because Aronofsky's storytelling does not give one the leisure of stopping to ask questions. Mother! is a thrill ride without breaks, barreling continuously into obscurity and queer satisfaction. Precisely due to its controversial story and debate among critics, film artists, and the public, Mother! may be a film to watch as Hollywood enters awards season. Only time will tell, just as Mother! garners kind sentiments after reflection and discussion. For those with keen eyes for film devices and writing, give Mother! a chance, and then another.
